Whether you are just entering the design field or attempting to project your future, you should have some understanding of what the job market looks like. Two prominent jobs in the design field include Architects and Urban Planners. In terms of pay, the jobs are very similar, but there are key differences that you should know. Read below for a basic summary of these two design positions (Data is provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).


Architect


  • 2020 Median Pay: $82,320 per year, $39.58 per hour

  • Typical Entry-Level Education: Bachelor's degree

  • Work Experience in a Related Occupation: None

  • On-the-job Training: Internship/residency

  • Number of Jobs, 2020: 126,700

  • Job Outlook, 2020-30: 3% (Slower than average)

  • Employment Change, 2020-30: 3,900


Urban Planner


  • 2020 Median Pay: $75,950 per year, $36.52 per hour

  • Typical Entry-Level Education: Master's degree

  • Work Experience in a Related Occupation: None

  • On-the-job Training: None

  • Number of Jobs, 2020: 39,100

  • Job Outlook, 2020-30: 7% (As fast as average)
