How can you balance the relationship between design and business?

A common problem that many designers face is the cost-benefit analysis of quality design vs project budget. This relationship is necessary in order to create an efficient way of doing business in the design field. How can you navigate this relationship successfully? These are 3 strategies that may come in handy during your design career…

Mission

  1. Do your due diligence when creating or joining a design team. Finding work is already difficult enough, but working in an environment that alienates quality can become increasingly taxing.

Communicate

  1. If you are not in a position to influence your current situation, the next route of action is to communicate with other departments within the business. Building relationships with your current practice may open the door to more discussion as it relates to design strategy and finances.

Value

  1. The aesthetics of a design can often be influential in decision-making. However, adding the long-term monetary value to the equation can improve the chances of your design recommendations being seriously considered.

Let's take a quick look at where the creative working class are located...

In a previous article, we covered the most creative cities to live in according to the number of artistic works within the city. In this article, we will take a quick look at the most creative U.S. cities according to the percentage of the working class that are in a creative occupation.

You can read the accompanying article here

One of the most shocking placements on the graph would be Detroit. Even Though the foundation of the city was built on the automotive industry, (which was automated because of the assembly line, hence mitigating creativity), Detroit has received noticeable funding to reshape the city and allow more opportunities for creativity. Another surprise was that Minneapolis was in the top 5 for creative class. Most cities have museums and art, however Minneapolis is not nationally known for being unique in terms of creative job opportunities.

Many times being creative is in our blood. Living and working in a place where that personality trait is shared can make working that much more enjoyable. This list doesn't speak to every creative metric within a city, but it is definitely a metric to consider if you are thinking of moving!

Strike a balance between creativity, productivity, and efficiency.

When you start to envision your work area, remember that this area is for you! There is an abundance of other workspaces that may influence the end result of your space, but your workspace should play to your strengths. For example, if you are a messy person you may envy the aesthetic appeal of a hyper orderly person. However, in your line of work, chaos may aid in the flow of your ideas. With that being said, let's take a look at 3 useful tips for your space!

Space

Finding space can be crucial to developing your ideas. As your life progresses, you will inevitably live in different places. If you live in a place that has a garage or basement that may work for you. If you are just starting out, maybe a small desk will have to be your starting point.

Theme

Whether it is color, shapes or the overall vibe, your workspace should have a theme. The attention to detail you put in your space is completely up to you. Even if the area becomes a catastrophe, you can at least find stability in the background of your space.

Let there be Light!

The lighting of your space can greatly affect how you partake in your work. Find a lighting solution that works for you. Whether it be dim light, natural light or an array of colors, choose something that enhances your focus and clarity.
